Project: Soccer Ball Crochet Hat

Two weeks ago, Mommy received an inquiry if we can make this type of crochet hat:
Soccer Ball Hat Crochet PATTERN
Source: Etsy
Before sayng “YES”, she asked me first if can do it since majority of the crochet hats is assigned to me. So I search the net to a get free pattern. Swerte meron! Check it HERE.

Unlike other hats, this one is like a puzzle, you need to make 6 pentagon, 5 hexagon and 5 half-hexagon, then attach them together to make a half soccer ball.

Now, my problem is, the finished product of the said pattern will fit a 4-5 months old baby only. The requested one is for 1-2 years old. Patay!

Project: Rapunzel Crochet Hat

Crochet Rapunzel Hat
Mommy mentioned in her post that after attending our friend’s wedding, I need to finish the Rapunzel hat. Because of not having a pattern and this is new to me, this took me about a week to finish two sets of different sizes.

After I finished this project, I asked Matt to fit the other one since the head circumference is the same as his. Wala kasing ibang bata na pwedeng maging model for this one. Buti nalang game si batang kulit and he keeps on saying it was “Galema” instead of Rapunzel. He got a point, mukang Galema nga naman lalo na ung maliit.

Project: Lightning McQueen Crochet Hat

Happy New Year to All! To start the year, I would like to share my last project for the year 2013 – the Lightning McQueen Crochet Hat.

Matt is a certified fan of Cars. He knows the major characters like McQueen, Hudson, Sally, Mater, Sheriff and Mac. He even called my service car as McQueen (Red Picanto), his Tito’s Pick-up as Hudson and our neighbor’s black car as Sheriff.

Last Christmas, we decided to have him a Cars-inspired outfit - clothes and shoes. To complete the set from head to foot, I made a Lightning McQueen crochet hat. Nakakakonsensya kasi yung sabi ni Mommy: “Andami natin nagawang hats for others this year, pero wala pa tayo nagagawa para kay Matthew.” This is one of the reasons why we closed the MTOs at Momaye’s Shoppe on the first week of December.

Projects: Crochet Minion Hat

I don't have any idea about Minions (napag-iiwanan na ng mga trending ngayon. LOL) but Mommy got a crochet hat order in Momaye's Shoppe. At first I thought it was for girls only since it will be made out of yellow yarn but when I finished and Matt tried to fit the hat, it can be for boys too. Here he is wearing the Minion hat:

Project: Homemade Soap (update)

After 4 weeks of curing my Homemade “Herbal Soap”, I already tried it and seems alright. It can make lather like any bath soap in the market. I did not feel any itchiness or stinging effect like I am expecting because of the lye (sodium hydroxide) which is known to have itching effect on skin. However, I haven’t tried used this on my face. Goodbye Coffee for Better?

Rice Coffee
Coffee is one of the best known beveragse in the world. It can be taken hot or cold and can be mixed with other components to make coffee more enjoyable. It was also known to contain anti-oxidants which is good for our health. On the contrary, natural medicine said that coffee must be avoided by those having high uric acids in the body since coffee is a form of beans which are known to have high in uric acid content. It is also known to be diuretic. They are recommending alternatives like the one I used - Rice Coffee. Just roast and grind the rice and you will have your homemade rice coffee.

Creepy Crawlers: Inside the Jar - Day 4

The first one was still silently "sleeping" inside its chrysalis while the other one seems already found its best place to hibernate and enter the next stage of the life cycle. Most Probably this afternoon, I can find another cocoon. I am really excited to see butterfly inside the jar.

Creepy Crawlers: Inside the Jar - Day 3

Still in the pupa stage while the other one still keeps on eating but seems to move slower compared yesterday. Perhaps, it will also start to locate itself and will turn into to its cocoon. According my colleague (a biology graduate) it will take about two weeks until it will completely transform into a butterfly.

I am so excited and hopefully I can capture it while the butterfly comes out of its cocoon.

Creepy Crawlers: Inside the Jar - Day 2

The larger one seems to positioned itself already and will start the stage – pupa. It seems to be idle too. The other one is still active on eating leaves (no pictures for this one because I did not got a clear shot of it).

At night, I was surprised that the larger one has already wrapped itself and turned into a cocoon while the other had grown much compared to its size in early morning.

Project: Mickey Mouse Hat

Mickey Mouse Hat
At last, after few attempt to make one, I'm done! (of course with a little help from Mommy)

Matt loves Mickey Mouse so I decided to make a crocheted hat. Good that I still remember how to crochet, which I learned during my elementary days. Just searched for some pattern and voila!

At first, Matt refused to wear the hat, so  I need to wear it first to let him see it was a Mickey Mouse  hat and there he goes, he put it by himself.

If you want this hat, just message me and let's talk about the price. LOL!

Herbal Plants: Malunggay (Horse Radish)

Homemade Malunggay Capsule

Malunggay or Horse radish (Moringa oleifera) is a popular plant because of its nutritional and health benefits and considered as “The Miracle Tree”. This plant grows in tropical countries and used mainly as vegetable in cooking.

Malunggay Fruit

Health Benefits

Malunggay helps in fighting malnutrition particularly in infants and breastfeeding mothers due to its nutritional contents. It is known to help increase milk flow of breastfeeding mothers. Furthermore, it is proven to contain vitamins like A (4 times as carrots), B and C (7 times as orange), and minerals such as calcium (twice as milk), iron and protein (4 tiems as milk). It is also found to contain high dosage of HDL (high-density-lipoprotein), a good source of  omega oils, antioxidants and amino acids.

Some studies showed that this plant contains anti-cancer properties and considered in the treatment of prostate and skin cancer. It is also found to have chemoprotective properties that strengthen cells and helps tolerate the effect of chemotherapy.

This miracle plant was also found to have antibiotic (antimicrobial and antibacterial) and antifungal properties while the seed was found to contain anti-inflammatory functions against rheumatism, arthritis and joint pains.

Supplements

It is awkward to eat malunggay daily just to get the benefits of the plant. There are many malunggay supplements available in the market but a little bit expensive.  I resulted to make my own malunggay supplement. I dried malunggay leaves (air dry), grind using bender, sieve thru strainer to remove stalks,  and encapsulate it in an empty gel capsule bought from Mercury Drug (42 cents a piece). Each capsule contains 250mg of pure dried malunggay leaves, enough to be a daily supplement.

I also used ground malunggay leaves in some of my cooking.

Project: Cross-Stitch

I was in third year high school (1996) when I learned and started cross-stitching. I started with a very small design composed of 7 colors (still displayed in our home in Nueva Ecija). After finishing the first “project” , I moved to larger designs like 2nd Angel of Peace,  Earth Angel, White Tiger, Mother and Child, Monalisa, Adonis, Day’s End, Baby Lion and Baby Panda (the last two were supposed to be my sister’s school project).

I also accepted cross-stitching jobs (materials were provided by ‘customers’)  during summer and Christmas breaks. I made Rose of Sharon and 2 sets of Ballerina Pairs.

Our wedding souvenirs were customized “Wedding Bells” placed in picture frames (we bought the frames in Divisoria). I just look for a possible design. My wife creates the patterns using Hobbyware where you can choose how many colors you want to use. Here are some of the finished product designs created using Hobbyware.

I also tried to customize one design named “Jesus Christ”. Instead of using metallic gold thread, I replaced it with plastic beads.

Most people think that this hobby is for women only. Nowadays, there are lot of men engaged in this hobby too. I remember that husband of one of my co-workers helped her in finishing their project entitled “United in Marriage”.

Project: Home Gardening

There are times that prices of vegetables shoot during its off-season. Tomatoes and bell peppers are just some of those which peaks at PhP 50.00 and PhP150.00 per kilo. Why suffer for those high-priced, off-seasoned vegetable where you can grow and harvest your own.
The problem is, where to plant? Like me that does not have enough area for gardening. Try recycling! Use empty cans, worn tires, empty softdrinks bottle and other options. See my previous post on recycling.
It grows well. I feel very happy to see after about two months, the bell peppers are already flowering while some were already bearing fruits. On the other hand, my tomatoes are also doing well but doesn't have any flowers until its 4th month.
Aside from the two veggies, I also have dragon fruits and grafted chico planted on a plastic pails, sweet tamarind planted on a KFC buckets, and some ornamental plants.
Now, I already started to harvest some of bell peppers while tomatoes are starting to bear fruits.

Project: Recycling Empty Milk Cans

My son is taking formula milk in replace of breastmilk (my wife returned to work 2 months after giving birth). Empty milk cans get accumulated and stored in our backyard. We are sellling some of them for PhP10.00/kilo which is very low. From then, I kept on storing those can which can be used for other purposes.

When the price of bell peppers got high (as high as PhP120/kilo), I told my wife that I will save the seeds and plant them. But the problem is, where am I going to plant those seeds? We don't have any available lot in our house, not even a small plant box. I resorted to the empty milk cans. I just have to paint it using "red oxide primer" before using for a little presentation.

I also saw the empty styro container (the one used to cushion the bottled chemicals) in the laboratory where I work, bring it home, and use it as plant pot.

Recycling this small items can be a big help in saving the environment.
