Save on Your Electric Bill: Extreme Power Saver V3

It was on the news that our electric bill will increase this month due to increase in generation charge. Finally, last week, I received our Meralco Billing (November 16-December 15) and was surprised that our bill increases by about 500 pesos for a 10-kWh additional consumption. Mommy always reminds everyone at home to unplug any electrical appliances at home when not in use since it still consumes electricity. I know that this is not enough so we need to looks for other ways to save on our electricity consumption

One of our colleagues mentioned before that they are using a power corrector device to reduce not directly on the price to be paid but on the power consumption. Once the power consumption was reduced, the price follows. Wala naman kasi tayong magagawa pagdating sa presyo ng kuryente. According to him, even they used welding machine during their house renovation, their power consumption was not that high compared to the previous one.

Merry Christmas to All!

Weight-Loss Using Hand Reflexology

Photo Source:  Swedish Massage and Indian Head Massage Therapy with Merve..
The year is nearing to its end and I am still 3kgs away from my target weight and instead of reducing the gap, it might increase due to holiday season. Still, I am glad because I shed about 2 kilos since I started hitting my goal last June. Minsan, medyo tinatamad kasi mag-exercise lalo na kapag weekends. LOL

Recently, I am searching ways or exercises while at the office to help facilitate weight-loss and I found something about reflexology that can also help achieving my goal just by stimulating some reflex points in our hands. This will only take 5 minutes every day and better if you can do this longer during breaks.

Gloc-9’s “Sirena”, “Katulad ng Iba” and “Magda”

The first time I heard Gloc-9’s Sirena, naaliw kaagad ako. Then I heard that there are other nice songs by him. I think these where all original composition by him. The other two songs that I like were about “prostitute” (sorry for the term, I cannot find an nicer word for it) and the other one is about bullying.

“Sirena” (Feat. Ebe dancel) is a story of Jose who happened to be a gay since he was a kid. His father keeps on beating him because he cannot accept the truth about Jose’s sexual preference. But one night, even with difficulty to speak due to cancer, his father asked forgiveness for all the things he did to him.

Herbal Plants: Tawa-tawa (Asthma Weed)

When we heard of tawa-tawa, we often associate this plant to the deadly dengue carried by mosquitoes. However, studies showed that it really helps treating the said disease but not directly fighting the virus. Instead, it helps in promoting cell production and reduce platelet destruction.

asthma weed, bebefits of tawa-tawa, Euphorbia hirta, gatas-gatas, healing galing products, tawa-tawa, tawa-tawa tonic,
Tawa-tawa (Euphorbia hirta), others called this as “gatas-gatas”,
is a hairy herb or weed that can be easily found in grasslands and pathways.
It has a slender stem with several branches that can grow up to 2 feet long.
(Source: Hottest Issue Today)
One of the best seller Healing Galing products is the Tawa-Tawa Tonic sold 150 pesos for 100ml (You can check other products HERE). They recommend this not only for dengue patients but for all having problems in their blood like anaemia and leukaemia. Tawa-tawa tonic is made by extracting the active components thru the process of distillation.

Don’t worry if you cannot avail the said tonic. You can prepare your own thru the process of decoction. For every 1 glass siksik of tawa-tawa plant (roots, stem and leaves) just add 3 glasses of water and bring to boil until it becomes like a tea. Drink this as replacement for water. But take note that tawa-tawa decoction can only be used within 24 hours after preparation unlike the distilled tonic that can last up to a year. After that, you must discard the remaining tonic since the active components were already turned into toxins that might give unpleasant results.

According to Dr. Edinell of Healing Galing, one way to determine that you are having blood problems is it will have a bitter taste but eventually turned tasteless like water after the problems has been fixed. This is true, I tried it.

Aside from improving the blood condition, here are some benefits of Tawa-tawa plant:

Antibacterial and antimicrobial – used to treat amoeba, dysentery, syphilis and some fungal infections.
Antiasthmatic – helps in breaking mucus and relaxes spasms. Some suggest to inhale the smoke of this in the form of cigarette.
Antidiuretic – This help in absorption of water and re-absorption of electrolytes thus keeping you hydrated all longer.
Anthelmintic – can be used as dewormer
Antihypertensive – It has a property that helps inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme.
Sedative – Helps in treating anxiety
Anti-allergy – helps preventing the early and late stage of allergy due to the shikimic acid content.
Milk stimulant – can be used to stimulate production of breast milk.

Furthermore, studies showed that it contains several phytochemicals like sterols, alkaloids, tannins, quercetin, glycosides, triterpenoids, alkenes, phenolic acids, choline and shikimic acid.

Based on studies and some testimonials from users, tawa-tawa is really a good herbal medicine. However, just like any other herbal plants, it should be taken with necessary precaution. Overdose can lead to gastrointestinal reaction, nausea and vomiting.

So what to do the whole day staying at home? As usual, kahit bakasyon, I must earn extra by crocheting. But what I am excited about this, it gave me extra bonding time with super kulit Matt by being “Yayo of the Day”! Yayo means male nanny.

Many said that men and women nowadays are equal. There are jobs specifically for men are now being done by women. So why can’t I do the same things as women do? For instance, crocheting. I know that most will definitely laugh after seeing me doing crochet because many think that this is just for women only and it will lessen my masculinity. I beg to disagree, ika nga!

How to Transfer Content of Your Blog to Another?

Mommy mentioned in one of her posts that we made a new blog to save from buying domains. Because of this, I had to say goodbye to two of my blogs – food and photography.

One problem I encountered is how to transfer the content of my two blogs to the newly created Our Family Blog About… considering the number of posts I had. One way I thought is to transfer one-by-one using copy-paste method. I did this to my food blog and it took me two weeks to transfer all the contents. Not until I discovered that I can make a simpler way – export-import method. It took me less than 5 minutes to transfer all the contents of my photography blog. Here’s how:

Typhoon Yolanda Fever

The disaster made by typhoon Yolanda puts our country in the world map again. Even foreign countries keep their eyes on the destruction made by the said natural calamity.

There are just some issues I observed with regard to this topic. Here are some:

The news or media focuses mostly on Tacloban area. I understand this one since this is the place severely hit by typhoon. However, there are other places that experienced the same problems. One is Capiz where I saw in Facebook.

Just like Mommy said in one of our conversation: “Kundi pa nagkaroon ng aksidente kahapon, hindi pa magkakaroon ng balita sa Manila.”, pertaining to the accident happened in EDSA-Magallanes the other day.

Movies for the Halloween

October is about to end and one trademark of this month is the Halloween. During this time of year, horror-themed films is common in television. Ironically, I love watching such type of movies but I am really afraid to see in reality. Aside from watching Supernatural Series, here are some of horror films that really caught my interest.
Into the Mirror
It is a story about strange murder incidents in soon-to-open Dreampia Shopping Center.  Victims are found to be employees of the mall and have committed suicide in a gruesome and unusual ways.

Wu Young-min, an ex-police, is very doubtful about the findings of the authorities in the said incidents and made his own investigation and later on found the reason behind the killings in the said shopping center.

Annual Physical Exam Results

As part of the benefits of the health card provided to us is the annual physical exam. Though it only covers chest x-ray, CBC, urine and fecal analysis, it is already better than nothing. Next year, I might request for a blood chemistry test to determine the condition of my blood cholesterol, uric acid, blood sugar and others.

Thank God the results of all the test is within the normal limit except for the blood pressure - which happens to fluctuate a bit. On the first day, I got 110/80 while on the following day it hit the 130/90 mark. I think there is something wrong on the 2nd day because the test was done without having any rest first but this serves as a warning for me.

"Moobs" Like Jagger (Part 2)

One of the problem is how are you going to perform this is it is raining outside? Why not shift to skipping rope? So there are no more reasons for excuses that you cannot perform this simple cardio exercise.

Chest Strengthening. Adding this will help your build muscles and increase your metabolism thus, helping burn more fats. If you don’t have much time, you can do this every other day. Some chest strengthening exercises are:

Be Responsible Drinker, A Chemist Dad's Experience

I just noticed that the age of youth engaged in drinking alcohols is getting younger. I am not against with it but I am just worried that I might experience this with my son. I admit that I started drinking occasionally when I was in late college year.

Though Papa can be considered regular drinker (As in araw-araw nakainom talaga!), he didn't influenced me nor invited me to have a drink with him, that was before. My peers are the ones who had let me taste the first alcohol I ever had.

I am not saying that Papa is not a good example for me but I thanked him for letting me know how to be a responsible drinker in a different way. Parang “reverse psychology” sabi nga.

Why I was not influenced by Papa? Here are the two main reasons that I think will answer this question.

I know how hard it is to be drunk. Not in the sense that I experience it before but I always observed from Papa and other older relatives. Pero minsan talagang nalalasing din ako. Di ba Mommy? I can really say how difficult to be drunk kasi na-experience ko na.

Mommy: “Kuripot ka kasi kaya ngayon ka lang nakatikim. Hahaha”
It has been months since I saw stalls in the market selling lanzones and rambutan but they are bit expensive (lanzones-160 per kilo and rambutan-80 pesos per kilo).

Finally, yesterday, I was able to buy it in the market. Vendors in karitons sell them at 30 and 60 pesos per kilo of rambutan and lanzones, respectively. I did not think twice in buying, but of course, kailangan muna tikman bago bumili. LOL. The rambutans are bit smaller than the usual while the lanzones are already lagas with a bit dark spots on its peel but both still taste good. Now, my cravings for these two fruits were already satisfied.

By the way, I also got two tumpok of dalandan for only 20 pesos.

Last week, I used Mommy’s USB Stick to one of our computers in the production. I was warned by the owner of the computer that there is a virus in that PC. I ignored precaution given to me since my computer has its own antivirus.

Upon inserting the USB stick, a shortcut file was created and all the files where transferred to it. When I returned the device to Mommy, she was surprised that she cannot find all her files saved on the device. She immediately scanned and found 4 different “worms”. Upon cleaning, no file was found but when you checked for the properties of the device, it shows that there is used space which means the files were still there but hidden. She started freaking already since all of the crochet patterns were there and she doesn’t have any back-up files.

I tried to search the net and found solution on how to recover the files hidden by the virus. Here are the steps:

1. Open the command prompt window (Start Menu>Programs>accessories>command prompt).

2. Find the letter that corresponds to your USB stick. You can easily find this in the My computer folder.

3. In the command prompt, type the letter that corresponds to your USB Stick followed by colon (eg, D: ) and hit enter.

4. Then type in attrib –s –h /s /d *.*
Command Prompt

5. Now go to your USB stick folder and you will find file folder.

6. Open this and you will find the current files in your USB stick.

For a safer move, I cut first all the file and put them in a new folder (Desktop) before reformatting the USB stick. This is just an optional though.

Care to share some of your tips on how to retrieve missing files from an infected USB stick?

Another Dad's Confession

Last Thursday, since it was holiday here in Bulacan, we decided to visit SM City Marilao to pay our water bill and unwind. However, it ended into something that is not expected.

We are on a computer shop looking for a desktop. Matt was hyperactive by then and just wants to run and run. He doesn't want to be carried and started to scream when we did it.

Then we decided to go down on the ground level using escalator. Mommy used to carry Matt downwards but he refuses and wants to do it by himself. She also asked him to hold her hands to guide him but again, he declined. I was already at the ground level waiting for them when Mommy asked me to go upstairs again and Matt was crying and screaming which makes all passers-by looking at him.

"Moobs Like Jagger"

Moobs
I am guilty or say conscious about this excess fat on my chest which make it looks like a boobs (medyo lang naman). I want to remove it but Mommy told me, "Yan nga nga ang asset mo e."

What?! An asset for a man?! LOL.

Such condition is medically known as gynecomastia and often referred to as “manboobs” or “moobs”. Other causes of this is excessive intake of alcohol, use of drugs like anabolic steroids, results from certain disease, congenital or even the dramatic weight loss can result to this one due to sagging of skin.

I read several steps to reduce or eliminate those “moobs” like those listed below.
