My Graduate Studies Journey: #RoadToMSChemistry (An Update)

Series of problem sets and take home examinations

It has been two years since I mentioned my graduate study journey at Central Luzon State University.

Back in 2021, the online classes began, and they posed a unique set of challenges. All of my classes were scheduled for Saturdays, which happened to coincide with my weekly work meetings.

Work meetings and online class at the same time

Most of the time, I found myself juggling two gadgets simultaneously to attend both online activities. This constant balancing act defined my academic year.

Moving on to the following academic year, things took a more challenging turn. I had a laboratory class that required face-to-face sessions.

To accommodate this, our weekly work meetings were rescheduled to Tuesdays, and I was immensely grateful for the adjustment, as it allowed me to accumulate leave credits by not attending classes on Saturdays.

Fortunately, our professor displayed great understanding and allowed me to skip Saturday classes, provided I made up for them by keeping up with the course activities.

The laboratory class was particularly significant, as it covered various aspects of my thesis work, using a plant of special interest to me—Clerodendrum schmidtii, also known as the Nodding Clerodendrum or commonly referred to as Indian Beads.

Working on my thesis

As I moved into my last semester, I faced the challenge of both laboratory and lecture classes, both held in a face-to-face format. My days began at 6:30 am and didn't conclude until 5:00 pm, all for just two subjects.

Even after the last semester ended, I still had a special topic subject assigned for the mid-term. We were tasked with selecting a special topic from a journal and required to conduct a comprehensive journal review, which we then had to present in class.

My special topic in Biochemistry

Aside from the special topic presentation, majority of our subjects require a journal review and presented as a seminar to our classmates and even BSChemistry Students.

After enduring four semesters and one mid-term, I am pleased to share that I successfully passed all of my subjects.
Acamedic subjects: Passed, Thesis: In-progress

Currently, I am eagerly awaiting the schedule for the comprehensive exam and hope to emerge victorious. I've also taken the initiative to forward my thesis draft to my advisor, eagerly anticipating her feedback, with hopes of presenting my proposal before the semester draws to a close.

With determination and perseverance, I am steadfast in my goal to retrace the same educational pathway I embarked on twenty years ago and ultimately earn my well-deserved diploma.

I'll make a follow-up post on my journey to #RoadToMSChemistry.

My Graduate Studies Journey #RoadToMSChemistry

graduate studies, CLSU, road to MSChemistry, #RoadToMSChemistry,

In 2021, my Alma Mater, Central Luzon State University, started to offer a graduate degree in Chemistry (Master of Science in Chemistry). This gives me a thought if I can pursue the said studies. I inquired what will be the platform of learning and I was fortunate that it will be online (synchronous and asynchronous). I took the opportunity since I can still attend work while attending lessons.

The first semester will be full of excitement since we are the pioneering batch of the graduate program and I will be meeting my previous professors in undergraduate.

During the first semester, lots of reviews are needed since I haven’t attended school for almost 20 years. With lots of readings and downloading references, I managed to cope with the lessons. The first semester went well and I was happy when I received my grades.

One of our first face-to-face session in the laboratory

In the second semester, we were able to choose subjects that will suit my chosen path for my research. I picked Natural Products since my undergraduate thesis is in the same area. In our Biochemistry subject, we were tasked to submit reaction papers on a given topic weekly. It ranges from common diseases, illnesses, and even forensics. I will be sharing some of my written works here too.

Working with protein isolation

In the current semester, one of my subjects is more laboratory work which requires a face-to-face session. Our professor is considerate since most of us are working and will not be able to attend class regularly. I can say that I am lucky since I can work on some of the laboratory activities at our workplace during my free time.

Aside from the laboratory class, I am currently enrolled in 2 seminar subjects where lots of paper reviews are at stake. The other day, I presented my seminar paper and last night I was able to finish one of the activities on another subject. A 3-minute pitch talk where you need to present a research paper from introduction to conclusion and recommendations in just three minutes.

Also, my research adviser asked me to finish my thesis outline, and shall be presented this semester. Wheeew! I got a month only to finish the paper.

That will be all for now. I will make another update on my graduate studies.

Reminiscing the CLSU Intramurals

Source
My alma mater recently announce to offer a graduate course in Chemistry – Master of Science in Chemistry. This caught my attention and immediately inquire about the said graduate program. Since we are still in the pandemic, all classes will be online. Because of this, I decided to take the course. The class officially started on September 13, 2021.

Studying at CLSU makes me reminisce about some of the important events during my undergraduate. One of those is the Intramurals.

This weeklong event happens during the first semester gives break to student from their academics and show their skills in sports.

CLSU Athletic Field during vacation

The event usually starts with a parade of the athletes wearing their respective uniforms composed of collegiate shorts and jerseys. It is followed with an openning program where the torch lighting is conducted at the atheltic field.

I heard that in the recently held CLSU Intramurals, different units have alredy their own name and logo that best represents their respective college. This logo are printed in their uniforms like the HBCU Shorts Collection.

Different colleges battles for medals in various sporting events like ball games, swimming, track and field events, chess, and not to forget the showcase of each unit’s muses bagging for the Miss and Mister Intramurals.

The Bleacher
The majority of the events happens on the athletic field. The bleacher is where the expectators go to watch the different games happening simultaneously. By the way, the bleacher is not only used during intramurals but also a venue for holding some classes and term examinations.

Source
However, if you wanted to focus on a specific event, you need to stay under the scorching heat of the sun because ball games like basketball and volleyball are located in an open area. Be sure to have your umbrella with you all the time.

Source

Swimming events happen in the CLSU Swimming Pool while indoor games like badminton and sepak takraw happen in the CLSU gymnatorium.

I know that many things in the Intramurals have changed since I left CLSU 18 years ago. Unfortunately, I will not be able to witness the innovations because, during the pandemic, it prohibits face-to-face classes and holding such events.

Carnival at CLSU 2019

During our Holy Week stay in our hometown it was also our Alma Mater's founding anniversary celebration. One of the features during the event is the carnival they placed in the sports ground.

Matthew was already in Nueva Ecija right after their school spending his vacation. He keeps on telling us that there is a perya and frequently asks Mama and Papa to visit the place.

One evening, they went there and this brave boy chooses to ride the horror train. According to him, Mama and Papa did not want to accompany him so he went alone. Good that there are students na isinama siya sa grupo.

He is learning to be independent already.

We were still able to visit the place but since it was Holy Week, konti lang ang tao.

I just took photos of the different attractions like the color ball.

Here you are going to place a bet on the color of your choice before releasing the ball. When the ball stops on the same color you picked, you won.

Another one, I don't know how it was called, but all you need to do is toss a 1 peso coin in the board. If the coin centers the square, you won.

Aside from the games, there are also rides like the horror train, Vikings and this swing ride similar to the Flying Fiesta in Enchanted Kingdom. Unfortunately, these rides are not available when we visited. Kung open lang, I will definitely try the Flying Fiesta.

I remember the last time perya or carnival was placed inside our school was way back on my elementary days. Where I got the fear of riding the Ferris wheel.

Before I go, please forgive me for this late post.

Our Week Long Vacation

Actually, it is not a long week since we officially started our vacation on Thursday. We spent it in our hometown.

Matthew was already there right since March because their school started their vacation earlier.

We still have worked on Wednesday. Mommy and I traveled right after our work.

The travel is smooth except for the traffic in some towns that are having prusisyon. Baliwag and San Ildefonso are just two of them that we need to take a detour just to stay away from the traffic.

We departed Sta. Maria, Bulacan at 6 PM and reached Nueva Ecija at 12 midnight. I felt sleepy already which make our travel three stop-overs to perk me up.

During our stay in our home town, I did several things that I missed.

Food.
Eating with bare hands is a must when you have these food served for breakfast or lunch.

I got an opportunity to cook pinapaitang baka too.

Tahong or mussels is definitely great.

Strolling.
On Friday, there is "Stations of the Cross" along the main streets of our Alma Mater. We decided to wake up early to join the said activity. Unfortunately, Matthew is not feeling well.

We just take a stroll in one of the places I missed visiting - "Lingap Kalikasan Park" or once known as "Little Baguio". There are more trees now compared before making the place looks like a forest without wild animals.

Here are some photos:

We also make a short stop in CLSU Lagoon and feed the fishes.

And Rizal Park.

Rest.
This is my favorite part of the vacation. Having a sleep of 6-8 hours without worrying about something is definitely great. A perfect time to recharge and prepare for the upcoming week. Just like what Mommy said in one of her posts.

“It was a well-spent break from work. No swimming, no outing. But full rest and sleep, and quiet time with the family. Now we are recharged and ready for more work.”

And since Matthew is not feeling well, talagang pahinga.
By the way, here are other photos taken during our stroll in CLSU.  These pictures were framed using ASUS Selfie Phone.

On our way home, we encounter series of traffic. At this point listening to upbeat music either new or old remixed by famous DJ's using special gadgets like dj controllers check it out at GuitarCenter is a nice way to ease the boredom.

Our travel time going back home is a bit shorter than previous.

How did you spend your week-long vacation?

CLSU Summer Festo 2016

Last week, we had a chance to visit our home town for some “business opportunity”. Mommy and I decided to take a try on this one rather than keeping our savings in the bank which gives an insignificant interest. We really need to take the risk. As the quotation by Christopher Columbus, “You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

Mama and Papa were surprised on our arrival. Though Mommy’s brother already mentioned to them that we are going home that they, hindi din kasi kami nag-inform na darating kami.

We were informed that there is an event happening at CLSU Oval (sports field), the CLSU Summer Festo. This event is the counterpart of the yearly Lantern and Float Festival every December.

It was 2002’s Lantern and Float Festival when Mommy and I last attended an event in the same place. Fourteen years na pala. Every year, we are planning to attend the same event but the date always coincides with our company’s Christmas Party.

There were floats, street dance contest, food stalls and much more to enjoy. Parang Lantern Festival din. Sinabayan pa ng mahangin na panahon that time.

Matthew is very happy and much enjoyed the event too. Parang hindi nagbyahe ng apat na oras.

There is also fireworks display but we haven’t caught it since it started before we arrived the place. Nagtreat pa kasi si Papa for our dinner.

What we watched is the street dancing competition by different colleges. They tour the audience by dancing into different Asian festivals like in Indonesia, Brunei, Myanmar and others. Kumpleto pati costumes and music. Some are accompanied with drums and beginner guitar.

After the street dancing, comedy duo is the next part of the event but did not start immediately. I asked Mommy if we can go home and take a rest after the long travel.

There have been changes in such event in our Alma Mater. The stage is a lot different from before. Kumpleto na ng light effects and widescreen is already installed so everyone can have a view even far from the stage.

By the way, sorry for the quality of photos, these were took using our phones.

I am hoping to attend such events in our Alma Mater in the future.

Captured Moments: The “Angry Bird”

The last time we went home to our hometown, we had a short tour inside our Alma Mater campus – Central Luzon State University.

One that captured my attention is the Y-shaped, skin-peeled acacia tree standing in the middle of the road as you enter the campus' main gate.

Since nagkamalay na ako, lumaki, until I graduated, this “century old” acacia tree is erected in that location. Until last year, the tree was cut, but the main part is left standing. The bark was removed.

Nobody from the students know what is the purpose of remaining part. Some called it “Angry Bird” because it looks like the tirador or sling shot in the Angry Bird game.

Literally, birds might angry for removing another home for them.

First Visit for the Year 2014

It has been our tradition to go home in Nueva Ecija right after celebrating Holiday Season. Mama and Papa used to visit us on Christmas day naman kasi.

We took the road last Saturday afternoon and arrived there at around 6 pm. Matt’s Tita Rona invited us for a dinner at the newly opened Jollibee-Muñoz, Nueva. Unfortunately we already took our dinner and it was a bit late since she will be out of her work at around 8:30pm. Isa pa, nag-eenjoy na si Papa playing with his makulit na apo. So we decided to move the treat for breakfast nalang.

Alma Mater's Christmas ID

If TV stations have their own Christmas Station IDs, our Alma Mater has also its own.  This is the first time I heard that our school has this kind of video. Kudos to the people behind this! Here it is:

Jose Rizal Wearing Barong?

I just observed that most monuments by Dr. Jose Rizal wears black suit even we consider him as our National Hero, we will rarely found him wearing our National Dress for men, the Barong Tagalog. An exemption is here in our Alma Mater, Central Luzon State University (CLSU), where you can see him wearing Barong.

PCC Dairy Products @CLSU

In my previous post about our long weekends, I mentioned that we got a chance to buy some dairy products at PCC-CLSU.

Before, they are just selling fresh carabao's milk which really an all time favorite of most residents - faculties, staffs and students in the University. Morning joggers, will definitely not forget to visit and bought a pouch of fresh milk.

As they continue to sell fresh milk, they tried to innovate their products. They eventually have choco-milk (combination of milk and chocolate), lacto-juice (fruit-flavored milk) and even pastillas made from pure carabaos milk. Their product is good for everyone. But for infants and children with sensitive gut, stick to lactose-free or probiotic and hypoallergenic alternatives like goat milk formula.

Now they are also selling veggie-enriched pastillas (malunggay, ube and squash), flavored polvoron, ice creams as well as plain and flavored yogurt.

Once you got a chance to visit my Alma Mater, try to visit the PCC Product Outlet Store and try to taste their products. This is also a great item for pasalubong.

Long Weekends Part 1

We reached our home in Nueva Ecija at around 9PM. We might be earlier if we haven't encounter traffic at Baliuag, Bulacan area. Due to tiredness, we just took our dinner and have our sleep.

The following day, we woke up early because Matt wants to go out already and see the fishes as promised by Papa.

Searching what to cook for breakfast, Mama told me to cook the eggs as well as the instant noodles. Then I saw bunch of different freshly picked veggies in the backyard and I decided to cook "dinengdeng" (an Ilocano dish) with a twist. Instead of directly cooking it in boiling water, I fried the veggies (round eggplant, okra, kamote taps and katuray flowers) before adding the soup. That was really delicious. Papa told me that the smell alone can already tell.

After breakfast, we went to Mommy's customer to deliver the ordered items (yes, we are still working even on holidays, LOL) together Papa, my sister and her daughter since we will proceed at CLSU Dairy to buy some of their products like pastillas de leche, polvoron, yogurt, and flavored milk drink. It was also Matt's chance to see carabaos in live. Of course, we have some photo sessions before going to the next spot, the feeding fishes (Matt's favorite hang-out in CLSU).
Yum! Yum! Yum!

Before lunch, we headed to the Poblacion to deliver another set of items for our high school classmate's order before proceeding to Lupao to fetch Mommy's sister and her daugther. Since it was raining, I was able to take pictures of the foggy mountains on the way (Sadly, most areas in the mountains does not have trees already). We have our lunch at MIL's house and spend the rest of the day before going back to our house.

That's is our first day of our long weekend.
