Few Things For Kids To Do During Community Quarantine

During the community quarantine, either ECQ, MECQ, or GCQ, kids are still advised to stay at home for their safety. However, they may get bored staying at home for long period of time.

How to kill their boredom?

There are several ways to keep your kids busy during the community quarantine.

Here are some of the things we did at home to make our Little Matthew busy.

Drawing
Eversince Matthew learn how to handle pen, he loves to draw.

You can level up their artistic skills through digital drawing. This will let use their creativity while enjoying their gadget time.

Instead of paper and pencil, stylus or mouse is used to draw with a computer or tablet. All you need is to have the software needed and an extra storage. Check the Rakuten site for examples of hard drives that will be dedicated to the digital drawing finished products.

Cooking or Baking
We encourage him to work in the kitchen too. Easy dishes like scrambled eggs or their favorite meal can be a good start for them.

For baking, simple cookies or chocolate crinkles may be a fun-filled activity for them.

Of course, you need to remind that they can only cook if you are with them to avoid unnecessary incidents.

Gardening
Like once said by Senator Cynthia Villar, this is the best time to introduce agriculture to our kids. We can do this by urban gardening.

Letting them doing the simple soil cultivation or watering will help a lot. You can explain the importance of gardening.

It is also the best time for them to gain more knowledge about plants. How they grow, what they need, and other things about plants.

Crafts and DIYs
Since we are into DIYs and other crafting, influencing Matthew with these passions is a good option.

We teach him how to crochet. This will not only let them gain new skills but also help them increase their patience and creativity. Crocheting also helps stimulate brain.

You can also introduce them into the Rhinestone Art.

Doing Household Chores
Letting kids help in household chores is another way to divert their attention. The simple sweeping of the floor, removing dust from picture frames, of just doing the vacuum of carpets and sofa will do.

There are still other ways to keep your kids busy during the community quarantine. Can you share other ideas?

4 Important Parenting Tips to Implement

It is well-known that giving birth to a child is not a tough task. The whole deal turns tough when it comes to bringing up your child. This is because a lot of efforts, commitments and sacrifices will be required to ensure that your children grow in the best way and with outstanding moral values. Needless to say, the behavior and character of a child is a clear reflection of their parents.

To begin with, parenting is something that has to be done using a defined criterion. This means that some parenting skills will be required. If you feel that you lack the skills, it is always a great idea to consult a professional or any other person who is more enlightened on parenting matters.

However, there are some fundamental strategies that any parent must use in raising their children.  Here are tips and strategies to use as your fundamental parenting aid:

Do Not Be a Friend to Your Child
A lot of parents tend to misinterpret this advice. It is important to note that you are not supposed to become your child's enemy simply because 'friendship' in parenting is ruled out. There is a way you can live with your child as a friend and at the same time watch their moves and rebuke every wrong act they do. Friendship with your child should only be within moral values and not beyond.

Drop Gender Biases
The problem with most parents is that they consider themselves the mother or the father to their children. Instead of viewing things from this perspective, you should consider yourself a parent and not a mother or father. Once you consider yourself a parent of a certain gender, it means that you will only focus on certain duties which rhyme with your masculinity or femininity. However, being just a parent will help you handle things in all aspects regardless any gender limitations.

x
Communication Is Essential
It is so unfortunate that some parents operate under very tight schedule and lack time for their children. Consequently, communication between the parent and the child is broken. It is important to note that communication is of paramount essence especially for parents with growing children.

The importance of communicating with your child is to know exactly what they are going through. You will also be in a position to provide the best parent advice verbally. Not to mention, your children will feel the love that you have for them once you find time to interact and communicate with them. Important to note, communication between parents and children is not meant to be serious always. Cracking jokes and playing around with them is also part of the deal.

Never Feel Guilty
A parent is never guilty in the face of their children especially when everything is done for their benefit. The problem is that some parents feel guilty once they punish their children even when everything is justified. They even offer apologies to their children for punishing them. For your information, it is the child who should apologize to his/her parents and not the other way. You have the full right and reason to correct your child for the best.

Tips In Case of Kid's Lost at the Mall

Source: Flicker

When we visited SM Baliwag two weeks ago and something happened. Matthew got lost on our sight while we are looking for something to buy.

At first we let him run away from us since he used to do this every time we go to the mall. After a few minutes, he will return. But that doesn't happen, he didn’t go back. Mommy and I started to look for him. We go on separate ways to make the search faster. I am afraid that he might go upstairs using the escalator.

Getting Ready for School

Ready for school
It’s Monday again! I hope you enjoyed your weekend.

Aside from the first day of the week, it is Matthew’s first day in school too. He is officially Kinder-2, another school year for him. The last step towards grade school. With his eagerness, I know he will learn more this year.

Most kids are excited about going back to school but to some parents, it is a difficult task.

Some parents experience problems waking-up kids to prepare for school. Glad for us that we didn’t encounter any problem with Little Bossing.

How we do that? Here are some tips.

Let them enjoy with limitations.
Since vacation time, we still allow him to enjoy it. We let him watch his favorite clips on TV via YouTube, draw his favorite character and superhero, play outside in the afternoon.

But all of these have limitations too.

As agreement, he needs to behave nice at home. If he breaks the rule, all of these will be limited for the next day or until he become nice again.

Just like Mommy shared, the rule of punishment is better than the reward system because this will let them realize their mistakes.

How To Encourage Your Kids To Draw

From the Little Prince (Elephant ate by Boa)
Since the age of three, he started to draw. There are times I cannot figure out what are in his paper pads until he claims it to be cars, trees, flowers, and even his favorite super heroes like Iron Man and Spider Man.

Naalala ko tuloy ang “The Little Prince”. A kid draws something and asks adults what it is. All replied it was a hat. But the kid told then it was a boa constrictor that ate an elephant.

With this here are some tips I can share on how to develop your kid’s ability to draw based from own experience.

Introduce at young age.
Learning at young age is a good option. This will help them develop their grip on writing instruments.

As early as age of two, we introduced pen and papers to Matt. Also, one of her Ninangs send a Mega Sketchers where he started to develop his drawing skills.

Stop The Bottles!

One of the problems encountered by parents is on how are they going to wean their babies not only from breastfeeding but in bottles too. I just noticed that there are some kids that are still on their bottles not only on milk but in some liquids too (juice, chocolate drinks, etc.). Some even at the age of 6 or 7, they cannot sleep if they don’t drink their milk using feeding bottles.

Good for us that we didn’t have difficulties when we stopped Matt in using feeding bottles. In as early as 2 years old and a span of less than a month, he stopped in drinking milk from feeding bottles. He never wake-up in the middle of the night and ask for milk. This might be one of the reason na rin why he didn’t pee at night aside from using cloth diaper.

Be Responsible Drinker, A Chemist Dad's Experience

I just noticed that the age of youth engaged in drinking alcohols is getting younger. I am not against with it but I am just worried that I might experience this with my son. I admit that I started drinking occasionally when I was in late college year.

Though Papa can be considered regular drinker (As in araw-araw nakainom talaga!), he didn't influenced me nor invited me to have a drink with him, that was before. My peers are the ones who had let me taste the first alcohol I ever had.

I am not saying that Papa is not a good example for me but I thanked him for letting me know how to be a responsible drinker in a different way. Parang “reverse psychology” sabi nga.

Why I was not influenced by Papa? Here are the two main reasons that I think will answer this question.

I know how hard it is to be drunk. Not in the sense that I experience it before but I always observed from Papa and other older relatives. Pero minsan talagang nalalasing din ako. Di ba Mommy? I can really say how difficult to be drunk kasi na-experience ko na.

Baby's Foot Reflexology

Preparing Your Kids to School

On my previous post, I mentioned that we are already searching for a school for our little Matt. However, one school we visited gave us an idea which we decided not to send Matt to school yet but mommy will put him in a home schooling sessions instead. You can check updates on her blog, Momaye's Diary. Also, my sister will give us module for nursery.

Speaking of school, in less than a month, the classes will formally start. Like me, I know that some parents are excited but a bit nervous in sending their kids to schools for the first time. Here are some tips that might help in preparing your kids to school especially in the preschool level.

Talk to them. Talking to your kids on going to school will be a big help in preparing them into their big step. Talk about his schedules, whose the one to bring and fetch them, how they feel – excited or nervous. If they feel nervous, just give them the positive side of being in school like playing and having new friends. Also, reading a story about first time in school can help.

The "DAMS" of Buying Toys

Photo Source: Feminist at the Sea
Toys are one of the things that our kids will surely love. These are also the things that will definitely catch their attention when they are with us either in malls or in tiangge.  However, as parent, we must choose the best toys for them like how we choose our personal things.

There are many guides in buying toys for me just remember the word “D-A-M-S”.

Durable?
You must check for the toys if they are durable especially when you are buying at tiangge. (Oops! I am not against buying toys in tiangge.) Check for the buttons and other parts that may break or snapped during playtime. Choosing the sturdy ones does not only give safety but it could possibly pass to their siblings.

Preschool Checklist

We are planning of sending Matt to preschool this coming school year, nursery or play-class perhaps. Aside from the consideration if kid is ready for school or not, just like what Mommy posted, we are also searching for the right school where he will attend.

There are some factors that need to be considered when choosing the right school. Here are some that needs to be checked when searching for school:

School
How old is the school?
What are the track records? Where do graduates go?
Where it is located?
How much is the tuition fee per school year? Is there any payment schemes?
What is the medium of instruction?
How big are the classes? What is the teacher-to-student ratio?

Factors Affecting Childhood Obesity

childhood obesity, obesity, Parenting, parenting tips, tips on parenting,
Photo source: Sarah Espanol – Com 466

Obesity is often referred to person with too much excess fat in the body. Before, we used to see these cases in adults but now, even our kids might be a candidate for obesity which we don’t want to happen to our kids.

Here are some factors that can lead to childhood obesity.

1. Oldies, like our grandparents, believe that the bigger the kids are, the healthier they are which is considered as a big myth. Overfed kids will develop a large stomach which needs more food to satisfy their hunger.  We know that kids will eat as long as they see foods in front of them. Being big is not always being healthy, remember, obesity is a sign of malnutrition too.

2. Choice of foods is also another factor that triggers childhood obesity. Kids at ages 3 and above usually love to eat sweets as well as high carb foods like chocolates and pasta. Try to make healthy options that are appetizing to your kids.

3. In our time today that we considered technology is having a great influence on kids, this is another factor that can lead to obesity. Kids nowadays have inadequate physical activities. They spend more time in from of TV watching their favorite shows or in from of computer playing their favorite games. Games that require physical activities like running, biking and walking is always became a second choice. Parents like me, take note of this, physical activities are not only for our kid’s benefit but for us too. It does not only improves your physique but it will give quality time to your family too.

As parent we must prevent our kids into this situation before it will lead to some problems. Obese kids are “cute” to look at but in fact it may lower their self-esteem later because of some bullying outside our home. Furthermore, more serious problem is that  obesity could lead to hypertension and allergies.

Many dads are unaware of how to change diapers of their kids especially the new ones. However, this is not always the case. For a hands-on dad like me, I consider this as part of being a dad and I am really proud of it. During my paternal leave, I used to help mommy on some baby duties since she underwent CS delivery. I used to prepare water for the bath, help mommy in bathing Matt, change diaper especially at night.
I just want to share my 10 easy steps on how to change dirty diapers to give idea on fathers-to-be, of course for mothers too.

Parenting Tips on Imposing Penalties to Kids

All parents encountered misbehaving kids resulting to some penalties. Most of the time enforcing the consequences resulted to failure causing them to continue misbehaving. Here are three basic tips to successfully impose consequences to kids.

Be realistic.
Most of us threaten kids to make them behave. However it should be kept in mind that we need to be realistic in giving threat so it will be feasible to enforce when needed. Giving threats without enforcing it will make them look at you as a good talker rather than a doer. If this happens, you will be in big trouble.

Tips for Picky-Eater Kids

I observed that many kids nowadays are picky with the food they eat. Some prefer to have meat rather than veggies. Some choose processed meats like hotdogs, tocino and longanisa. As first time parent, I was worried and consider this as one of the major problem by most parents. Good thing we did not experience this kind difficulty with our son who used to eat what we eat without any hesitation. Of course you still need to be careful on the food you give to your kids.

To resolve this issue, I would like to share some tips based on my experience.

Introduce veggies at early age.
When Matt learned how to take solid foods, we preferred introducing him mashed veggies than meats. Although meat is a major source of protein needed in their growth and development, there are some alternative sources like eggs and veggies high in protein.

One of the veggies that kids hate is the bitter gourd or ampalaya. If you try to introduce this to your kids when their taste buds are starting to develop, they will surely familiarize with its taste making this as one of their favorites.

We also used to give Matt oregano extract mixed with his milk every morning to prevent him from getting cough and colds thus making him familiar with bitter taste. Furthermore, this will help your kids to love taking medicine. In our case, Matt loves to take medicine whatever the taste is.

Switch food varieties.
To prevent being bored about the food they eat, try to switch every now and then. Better give them different meals daily.

When we introduced Matt with baby foods like Cerelac and/or Gerber we used to buy different variant in small packages and give him different flavour every week. Furthermore, try to make your own baby food. This is lot cheaper compared to those sold in the market.

Make your own.
If your kids start to love processed foods, make your own. Processed meats are considered unhealthy because of the artificial flavorings and colors. Making your own processed food does not only give you confident of the healthy food but you are sure that these foods are safe and sanitized.

I used to make my own skinless longanisa and chicken tocino where Matt loves to have it in his plate. Maybe one day, I will make my own hotdogs too. LOL.

Mask your food.
How? If your kids do not want to eat veggies, why not use them as major ingredient in making their favourite dishes. For example, if your kids love burgers, try to make use of veggies like hearty burger (banana blossoms). You may also try making squash pancake or siomai made of kalabasa and sardines.

Matt loves the hearty burger

Another way to mask your veggies is make dried of it and incorporate them in your meal. I used to make dried malunggay leaves, grind it and add them in soups and other meals.

I hope this will help in someways to parents having picky-eater kids.

How about you, do you have any tips to prevent kids from being picky?
