Herbal Plants: Spirulina (Healing Food)

Source
During our visit to Healing Galing Office, my MIL as given this Healing Food or Spirulina as one of the required medication she will take. I just wonder why they are referred as healing food. What is in this supplement? What particular herbal plant it came from? What are the benefits we can get from this one? With these questions I tried to research about the said product.

Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima) is a type of blue-green algae that grows in warm, alkaline water that considered to have abundant health benefits making this as super food. It contains high amount of protein (60-70%) which is a good source of essential and non-essential amino acids. Furthermore it has essential fatty acids like omega-3, DHA, GLA, palmitic, oleic and stearic acid.

Also, this Healing Food (sometimes called as super food) can provide needed dosage of vitamins A, B complex, E and various minerals like Ca, Fe, P, Mg, Zn, Se, Cu, Mn, Cr and K (do we need to review your chemistry notes? LOL)

Aside from the animo acids, vitamins and minerals it also contain antioxidants and phytonutrients like chlorophyll, lutein, xanthophylls and many more.

With the wide variety of nutritional content of the said algae, it can be equated to the number of benefits you can achieve from the said supplement. No doubt it was called as Healing food or Super Food.

It can be taken either powder (incorporated into juices, soups, pasta or yogurt), pressed tablet (the one we bought from Healing Galing) or in capsule form. One to five grams divided into different intakes a day can give you the benefits of:
Boosting energy and alertness, immune system against sickness, vision
Guarding against asthma and other allergic reactions
Protecting the liver and kidneys
Reducing birth defects, incidents of eye diseases, toxic effect of radiation and chemotherapy

However, before taking this supplement you must ask your doctor because even though it has many health benefits, there are some downsides like headaches, muscle aches, poor concentration, sweating, constipation, fever, dizziness or even rashes. Also, you must get this herbal supplements in a reputable drugstores and try to check the trusted brands because these organisms are prone to heavy metal contamination absorbed from the water where it was grown.
